Snowmobiling in Yellowstone

Snowmobiling

Around the end of October, Yellowstone National Park closes to all vehicular travel. That doesn’t mean that one cannot access the beauty of the park. For doing just that, snowmobile access to the park exists to allow visitors to enjoy this winter wonderland.

Snowmobiling in Yellowstone, though, has not been without its bad marks. When snowmobiles were first used in the park, controversy ensued. Early snowmobiles were noisy and polluting. Traditional visitors to the park complained that they were ruining the pristine beauty of the park.

A lot has changed since then. Once lacking in pollution-reducing measures and very loud, snowmobiles are now quieter and cleaner running than ever before. Effective policy enforcement and limits to the number of snow vehicles allowed in the park have allowed the natural experience to return.

Permits are required and can be obtained at any of the park offices outside park. Remember to follow all posted rules and be prepared to possible severe winter weather.
